THE demolition drive around the Deonar dumping ground re-started on Tuesday and hopes to clear out around four acres of land, which will be converted into a recreational ground. Nearly 87 shanties were removed on Tuesday.

Kiran Dighavkar, assistant municipal commissioner of M-East ward, said, “The structures demolished earlier were mostly shanties, which did not take much time. The structures which are being demolished now are brick structures and we need to allow the residents to move out with their belongings before the structure is razed.” He added that once the land is reclaimed, a recreational garden will be created there which will be accessible to the residents of Govandi to prevent encroachments.
