The eight accused in the Amboli gangrape case on Friday were remanded by a metropolitan magistrate court in Andheri into further police custody till November 7. According to Amboli police, the eight accused had allegedly gangraped a 28-year-old woman when she was house hunting with her husband late Monday night. The accused had earlier been remanded to police custody till November 4 by a Bandra court.

During the hearing, the defence called the entire story “suspicious” and sought bail for the accused, saying that the prosecution did not have the
medical test results yet.

The public prosecutor sought further custody on the grounds that the investigation was still in progress and the police were waiting on the medical test results. “Since there are eight accused in the case, the results take time,” said the prosecutor.

The incident allegedly took place when the victim and her husband stayed over at a family friend’s place, a tenement in Shyam Nagar in Jogeshwari West, on Monday night after looking for houses in the area. The friend had gone out to work, leaving her house keys with the couple. Bharat Gaikwad, senior police inspector at Amboli police station, declined to comment and maintained that the investigation was in process.
