With mandals getting permission for use of loudspeakers till midnight and musical instruments allowed post midnight for an extra day, noise levels in the city are set to peak during Ganeshotsav. Activist Sumaira Abdulali, founder of Awaaz Foundaton, who has been measuring noise levels at Ganeshotsav celebrations for the past 10 years, said,“Noise levels at the celebrations are usually in violation of the permissible levels. While the permissible level is 55dB after 10pm,last year celebrations rang as loud as 121dB.” Authorities need to be apprised of disregard of the norms,Abdulali said.

After actor Shah Rukh Khan participated in a Dahi Handi celebration at Ghatkopar last week,Abdulali had written to him: “With a heavy heart,I watched your endorsements of two politically organized Janmashthami celebrations where noise rules were violated in blatant and willful disregard of the law of the land and High Court and Supreme Court Orders.”
