SANTOSHEE GULABKALI MISHRA
Sayyed Sheikh, the alleged mastermind of the abduction and murder of 12-year-old Rohan Gucchait, has said in his confession that he picked Rohan as a target because the latter’s father had a habit of flaunting his wealth, the police said on Wednesday.
Rohan, a resident of Kalyan, had gone missing on April 17 this year, and his dismembered body was found in Kalyan on April 27. The Thane Police Crime Branch went on to arrest Sheikh along with three others in the case, and it came to light during subsequent investigations that Sheikh had kidnapped Rohan for money and panicked after learning that his family had approached the police, after which he allegedly killed the boy. According to Thane Crime Branch officers, Sheikh, an electrician by profession, used to be in constant touch with Rohan’s father Uttambhai, due to which he noticed that the latter seemed to have a lot of money to spend.
“Sheikh has said that he was shocked when Uttam once invited him for the birthday party of the family’s pet dog earlier this year. During the birthday party, Uttam gifted a gold chain to the pet. Shaikh has further said that that he was astonished on seeing a gold chain being gifted to a pet dog,” said a senior official with the Thane Crime Branch.
The officer added that Sheikh had asked for money from Uttam in the past, and that Uttam had always given it to him. “Shaikh needed Rs 15 lakh to pay off a debt and hence started making extortion calls to Uttam. When Uttam did not take his calls seriously, he decided to kidnap Rohit, believing that Uttam was sure to pay up for the sake of his son. The fact that Uttam did not approach the police in connection with the ransom calls further encouraged Sheikh. However, when he kidnapped Rohit, Uttam approached the police, causing Sheikh to panic, which led to Rohan’s death” said the officer.
Apart from Sheikh, the police have also arrested Nilesh Salve, Ganesh Patil and Imtiyaz Abdul in the case and they are all currently in police custody.
