OSHIWARA police investigating the murder of a 40-year-old woman whose body was found at her residence Wednesday have allegedly found out that the accused driver robbed her ornaments and fled as he wanted to clear debts and settle in his village in Ratnagiri district.
The driver Pravin Kagze was arrested Thursday after he allegedly confessed to having killed his employer Sushma Darekar and to robbing her gold ornaments worth Rs 9 lakh with the help of his cousin Nilesh.
Kagze,a resident of Vakola, allegedly confessed that he had a huge loan to pay,and decided to rob Sushma when her husband was out of town.
Officers from Oshiwara police station said they nabbed Nilesh from Ratnagiri and brought him to Mumbai Friday.
On the day of the murder,Kagze and Nilesh allegedly went to Sushmas fifth-floor apartment at Greenpark building in the Patliputra area in Oshiwara to clean the victims car. The duo allegedly went to meet Sushma to get the car keys, when they started chit-chatting with her. Sushma asked the two to stay for dinner. After dinner, they left.
After they made sure the coast was clear, the two went upstairs again. While Kagze gagged Sushma,Nilesh strangled her. When Sushma stopped breathing, the two gathered the ornaments and set a stack of newspapers on fire to make it look as if Sushma died of burns. The duo shared the ornaments before fleeing, police said.
While Nilesh allegedly fled to Ratnagiri,Kagze returned to his home and gave instructions to Nilesh to clear their debts while he settled everything in Mumbai before returning to Ratnagiri for good. Cops have recovered the stolen ornaments from Kagze and Nilesh.
On Thursday, police acquired call data records of Kagze and located him in Bandra, while his employer the victims husband Sunil was in Pune.
