A little over a month ago, swimwear designers Shivan Bhatiya and Narresh Kukreja got a call from their choreographer and entrepreneur friend Harmeet Bajaj, who put forth the idea of a creative collaboration,as part of Smoke House Deli’s innovative concept called Deconstruct. “Bajaj, who is a director at the restaurant chain, had her team of chefs create a special menu inspired by our recent Barnett Newman collection. From the colour-blocked polenta and the cottage cheese and tomato jelly to colour-blocked jello shots and the watermelon and mint martini, the items on the resulting menu clearly took visual inspiration from our clean lines, geometric patterns and colour blocking,” recollects Kukreja, who was amazed by the cocktails and appetizers the chefs drew up as they represented the spirit of the brand in more ways than one. “During the trials and tastings,we gave feedback in order to lend the dishes a texture akin to that of our clothing. Moreover, the boards put up at the restaurant traced the progress of this design experiment. It all came together beautifully,” he says.

However, this collaboration isn’t the only one the duo can boast of this season. Equally interesting is their association with Brazilian flip-flop brand Havaianas. Taking a cue from Shivan and Narresh’s range of accessories, the flip-flop brand has rolled out three designs — each in two colours — making it a total of six varieties. “The brand really liked our design aesthetic and their design team wanted to take the story forward, particularly because their flip-flops go very well with our swimwear creations. Accordingly, theirs is a range that has flip-flops in ivory white, aubergine and elegant nudes. The focus, though,is on the embellishments — be it the gold trinkets or the ceramic trims,” points out Kukreja, who was first approached by the footwear brand seven to eight months ago. Available on the brand’s website and at the designer duo’s stores in Mumbai and

Delhi,these hand-sewn flip-flops

are the perfect accompaniment to holiday beachwear.
