The Thane Rural Police have arrested seven persons who allegedly shot at a businessman in Bhiwandi last month in a robbery attempt.

According to police, Akshesh Patel, a businessman who partly owns two petrol pumps in Bhiwandi, was shot at in the Bhiwandi market area on June 23 by two motorbike-borne men. Patel took a bullet in the jaw, but managed to drag himself to the nearest police chowkie. The assailants fled on their bike, which was red in colour.

“We got a tip-off that a man named Imran had recently come to stay with  a history-sheeter, Zuber Laden, and that this person owned a red motorcycle. We started with this lead,” said inspector Kishore Khairnar of Thane Rural Police.

The police subsequently detained Imran Mubarak Khan (28) who told them that three men, identified as Sudam Kanekar, Ranjit Kashiwale and Manmohan Singh, had planned the robbery and contacted him and Laden for help. Laden had then contacted Wasim Shaikh, a shooter from Malegaon for the job.

“We have arrested all the seven involved in the firing but are still to arrest the person who tipped them off about Patel’s routine,” said Khairnar. The accused will be produced in court on Tuesday.
