Six suspected members of the Sabalgarh gang in Madhya Pradesh were arrested after they attacked two police constables,injuring them in Virar on Sunday.
Police apprehended them after opening fire and injuring one of the gang members. The police said they were involved in house break-ins at Virar,Dahisar and Bhiwandi.
Police said they were on their way to carry out a robbery,when they got a tip-off. When the police tried to intercept them,they attacked the cops with choppers and iron rods,police said.
The suspect injured in the firing was identified as Vicky Singh,33. The clash took place in Chandansar area in Virar (East) on Sunday after Dahisar police received a tip-off that the gang was on its way to Amit Society to rob houses.
When the police reached the spot they spotted a tempo they had been informed about. The tempo driver saw the cops and began to flee,Sunil Deshmukh,assistant commissioner of police (Dahisar division) said. The cops intercepted the tempo and searched it.
When police constables opened the tempo door,the suspects assaulted the constables with choppers and rods, Deshmukh said.
The police fired one round,injuring Vicky Singh. The constables were injured on the hand and back.
Reinforcement was called in and a team from Virar Police station and another from Dahisar police reached the spot to nab the suspects.
The five other suspects who were arrested were identified as Amarsingh Tak,Singru Singh Tak,Raju Singh Tak,Mangal Tak and Andasingh Chikalkar.
Police have seized the tempo and recovered two swords,iron rods and instrument used for house break-ins.
All the six arrested have been charged with attempt to murder,assault on public servants and other relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code.
The injured constables and Vicky Singh have been admitted to Sanjeevani Hospital in Virar.
