Five unidentified men armed with guns and choppers allegedly barged into a jewellery store in Navi Mumbai, vandalised it and robbed gold jewellery and cash together worth Rs 30 lakh Tuesday. The Nerul police have initiated an investigation into the incident.

According to police sources, the incident occurred around 9.15 pm at Vishal Jewellers in Juinagar,Nerul. Police said besides owner Kapil Pariad (23),there were only two customers in the store when the robbery occurred.

“The robbers entered with their faces covered with scarves. They were all armed with choppers and one of them also had a country-made gun. They demanded that Pariad hand over all the jewellery in the store and cash to them. When he refused to comply, they started breaking the glass of the display cases and then robbed whatever jewellery they could get hold of and Rs 5,000 from the cash counter,” said an officer with the Nerul police station.

The robbery was over in around five minutes, after which they fled in a car, which was waiting outside. Pariad then reported the robbery to the Navi Mumbai police control room, and the information was relayed to the Nerul police, after which a team of policemen reached the store.

The car was later found abandoned near Kerala Bhavan in Vashi Wednesday morning. Some eyewitnesses, who had seen the robbers flee, identified it as the same vehicle. Police have taken the vehicle into custody.

“We are conducting nakabandis across the city and are also making inquiries among our sources to identify and apprehend the accused. A complaint of dacoity against unidentified persons has been registered under the IPC,” said the officer.
