With around 15 days left before all road works will be stopped ahead of the May 31 monsoon deadline,a review of the ongoing construction of major and minor road works across the city by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporations roads department showed that nearly 30 per cent of new major roads will not be completed before the deadline. At the same time, only 84 roads of the proposed 650 minor roads have been completed so far.
Despite initial plans of finishing the entire work before the monsoon, more than 30 cement concrete and asphalt roads across the city will be taken up later.
Among the 178 new major roads to be constructed, the civic body has completed 40 cement concrete and 41 asphalt roads. In the island city,14 cement concrete and 24 asphalt roads have been completed. The BMC had to drop three concrete roads and two asphalt roads, while eight roads in the island city will be completed before the monsoon and three roads will be taken up after the rains.
A number of changes have been carried out by the BMC in its original plan for the suburbs, having dropped as many as 17 roads in the eastern suburbs. The plan to resurface 10 roads in Shivaji Nagar has been dropped due to a thick network of illegal water connections. As many as 23 roads will be taken up after monsoon in the eastern suburbs.
Chief Engineer (Roads) Ravindra Ghodke said new roads have been added to the original schedule. There have been some changes in our plans for the eastern suburbs. While a number of roads have been dropped due to various reasons,we have taken up equal number of new roads for resurfacing.
Despite the delay in getting permissions from various utilities to begin work, around 50 cement concrete and asphalt roads have been completed in the western suburbs and not a single concrete or asphalt road has been dropped here unlike the other areas. While not a single asphalt road will be taken up after the monsoon, only one cement concrete road will be taken up after the rainy season. The civic body has to complete only nine cement concrete and asphalt roads before the monsoon deadline.
