THREE members of a Chembur-based family, including two children, were killed and five persons injured as their SUV was hit by a trailer in Vasai area on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway on Sunday.
Waliv police said seven persons, including five members of the Kharwad family and two of the Chadana family, were traveling to Ahmedabad via the National Highway 8 in a Mahendra Scorpio, when the accident took place around 6.30 am near Vasai phata bridge. Both families reside in Chembur.
“A trailer, which was also travelling towards Gujarat, was moving alongside the Scorpio when the trailer driver suddenly applied brakes. The SUV driver lost control and collided with the trailer from the side,” said an officer.
Police said all seven persons suffered grievous injuries and were taken to a nearby hospital. Kishansingh Kharwad (40), his son Puransingh (15) and niece Anita (10) were declared dead on arrival, police said. Kishansingh’s mother Laxmibai (75), his daughter Geet (16) and another niece, Mamta (13) were seriously injured. Two members of the Chadana family —Devlibai (42) and Pooja (12) — also suffered injuries.
“They were admitted to Platinum and Golden Park hospitals. They are stable. We will record their statements once they recuperate,” said a police officer.
Police said the trailer driver, Jaysingh Jagdhari Rajbhar (38), a resident of Titwala, has been booked under relevant IPC sections. Police said Rajbhar also suffered injuries and was admitted to a hospital. He will be arrested following his discharge. Prima facie, he was not driving drunk, police said.
