A 28-year-old Ulhasnagar resident was found to have killed his wife and then killed himself in their residence on Wednesday morning. The police suspect his addiction to alcohol and ongoing marital discord between the couple to be the reason behind the extreme step.

According to the Vithalwadi police, the deceased couple has been identified as Sachin Shinde (28) and his wife Surekha (26). The police said that the couple had coe to stay in the Sambhaji Chowk area in Ulhasnagar around six months ago. Sachin used to work in a printing press in Ulhasnagar, while Surekha worked with a photo studio in Dombivli.

“Surekha’s parents stay in Dombivli, and it was a daily practice for her to visit them after work before proceeding home. On Tuesday evening, Surekha did not visit her parents as per her habit, which made her father suspect that something might be amiss. He went to her residence on Wednesday morning and when repeated knocking elicited no response, he peeped in through an open window, after which he saw Sachin hanging by a rope from a beam in the ceiling, while Surekha was lying on the floor lifeless,” said Senior Police Inspector V C Dolas, Vitthalwadi police station.

Surekha’s father then raised an alarm and broke the door down with the help of some neighbours. Sachin and Surekha were rushed to the municipal hospital in Ulhasnagar where they were declared dead before admission. The Vitthalwadi police were subsequently informed and a team of policemen reached the hospital to conduct inquiries.

A preliminary medical examination has indicated that Surekha died due to strangulation, and the police believe that Sachin strangled her to death before hanging himself.
