A slab collapsed in a house in Shivaji Nagar while it was being renovated, killing two of its residents on Thursday evening.
Shivaji Nagar police said the single-storeyed structure was located on Anwar Masjid Road in Shivaji Nagar. Residents were adding an additional floor to it when the incident occurred around 5 pm.
“The occupants of the house were doing the renovation work on their own. The slab of the additional floor caved in and collapsed on the ground floor, crushing two people underneath,” said local corporator Noorjahan Rafique Sheikh, who was present at the spot.
People who witnessed the collapse called the Mumbai Police control room as well as the Fire Brigade, and rescue operations began within the hour. The two victims taken to Sion Hospital where they were declared brought dead.
The deceased have been identified as Arif Sheikh (38) and Meena Ayub Sheikh (55).
“We have requested for any information that the BMC might have about the structure, after which we will decide whether there are enough grounds for registering a case of causing death due to negligence. We have registered Accidental Death Reports for now,” said senior inspector Radheshyam Agarwal. ENS
