Two Rajasthan natives who allegedly stole cash and valuables totalling Rs 65 lakh from the Borivali residence of a civil contractor earlier this month were arrested on Saturday.
The police have recovered the stolen gold as well as Rs 56 lakh of the cash from the accused.
According to Borivali police,Raghuveer Purohit,who stays with his wife in Ganjawala Lane in Borivali (west) last week lodged a complaint saying that Rs 61 lakh in cash and Rs 4 lakh worth of gold had been stolen from his house while he was out of town.
We found that the domestic help of the Purohits,who is a minor,had told one of his relatives that his employers were going out of town for a while,and that there was a lot of money in the house. We identified the two accused as Shiva Koli (27) and Sardar Koli (28),both hailing from Rajasthan, said senior inspector Bhagwan Chate.
On Friday,police received a tip-off that the accused were hiding in Raniwada taluka of Rajasthan and sent a team there.
Working in collaboration with the local police and residents,police arrested Shiva and Sardar and brought them to Mumbai on Sunday.
Purohit assists his father-in-law with his construction business. The money belonged to his father-in-law and had been given to him for safekeeping. Shiva and Sardar have been remanded in police custody till April 3, said Chate,adding that the help was being questioned to confirm whether he was involved in the theft or became an unwitting accomplice.
