Two injured; Rly says overcrowding caused accident.

Two persons were killed and two injured after they were pushed out of a crowded Kalyan-CST local as it crossed Sion station around 8.50 am on Thursday.

The deceased include Meravala Satish Kayappa Merawala (16) of Dharavi. The student of Central Railway Employees School in Parel was going to take the winter SSC exam.

Kedar Yadav (33) of Sion Koliwada was also killed in the accident that left Jiya Ansari (26) and Uday Sharma (31) unconscious. Ansari of Mumbra was going to Parel.

Railway staff shifted all four to Sion Hospital by 9.10 am but Kayappa and Yadav did not survive the fall. A 50-strong crowd of mostly slumdwellers, including Kayappa’s mother and sister, was waiting outside the Sion Hospital ICU,unaware that the teen had been already declared dead.

Divisional Manager Mukesh Nigam and other Railway officials visited the site of the accident and the hospital. “An obstacle was found at the accident site. It seems to be a case of overcrowding. Sharma was first to fall from the train. It seems he had estimated he would fall and prepared himself as there was a lot of pressure from inside the coach. He landed on his arms and knees. A few seconds later, the other three fell. Caught unaware, they landed on their faces,” Nigam said.
