Mumbai: Bus accident on NH8 kills 11, police say driver fell asleep at the wheel

According to state Highway Patrol Security officials, the prima facie evidence indicates that bus driver of the minibus fell asleep and caused the crash.

Eleven persons, including a 5-year-old girl, died and 15 others were injured after a minibus, on its way to Surat, crashed into a luxury bus on NH 8 in Thane Rural at around 3.30 am on Monday morning on, police said.

According to state Highway Patrol Security officials, the prima facie evidence indicates that bus driver of the minibus fell asleep at the wheel and caused the crash.

“We have made inquires with eye-witnesses, mainly nearby truck drivers, and also the tyre prints of the minibus left on the road indicates a sudden change in course of the vehicle,” said Gaurav Shinde, a police official with the state Highway Patrol.

Police said that the incident took place on National Highway 8 that connects Mumbai to Gujarat in front of Sahayadri Hotel in Talasari area. The luxury bus was on its way to Mumbai from Surat, Gujarat.

“The death toll so far is 11. While 10 bodies, six males and four females, have been taken to Talasari Rural Hospital. The five-year-old minor who died in road accident has been taken to Vinoda Bhave Hospital in Khanewal, which falls in Dadra and Nagar Haveli area,” said police official SP Daniware with the Talasari police station.
