Two members of a political party were shot dead and nine injured in a clash between two rival groups of the party in Kagal taluk of Kolhapur district on Sunday. Six persons were arrested by Sunday night. The police said more arrests were likely.

The deceased have been identified as Ravindra Dongale and Vilas Kotekar. The injured have been admitted to a hospital in Kolhapur and the condition of one of them is said to be critical.

Police said the dispute was over the location of a sewer line to be laid in Belwale Khurd village. Around 9 am,members of the two groups gathered at Belawale Khurd, the police said. A little while later, arguments broke out between the groups and a member of one of the groups opened fire, said an officer.

Jaywant Deshmukh, sub divisional police officer for Karveer division said,“The process of registering the FIR was on till late on Sunday. Some of them are members of a political party, but it seems that the dispute was over a local issue and personal grudges came into play. The case will be clearer after we record the statements of those injured. As of now,we do not suspect any political angle to the incident.”
