A 57-year-old woman was murdered at her residence in Anand Vihar area of Basti Jodhewal on Wednesday evening.

The Basti Jodhewal police booked Vipan Kumar of Gurbaksh Colony of Kharar and his two unidentified accomplices for the murder following a complaint of Pooran Chand, husband of the victim.

Alleging that his son-in-law had hired contract killers for killing his wife Pushpa Devi, Pooran said he was present at home at the time of the incident while his wife was in the kitchen. He said that he heard screams of his wife and was shocked to see the two accused holding his wife and stabbing her with sharp-edged weapons. He rushed her to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, but she succumbed to injuries on the way.

Inspector Harpal Singh, SHO at Basti Jodhewal police station, said that Pooran had told the police that his daughter was married to Vipan Kumar in 2013. Vipan works in Reliance Fresh store in SAS Nagar (Mohali). The couple had strained relations and had filed an application in court for divorce.

Vipan allegedly blamed his mother-in-law for strained relations.

The SHO said that raids were being conducted to arrest the accused.
