The city is gearing up for the Municipal Corporation (MC) elections and to woo voters in the last phase, councillors have made up their mind to leave no stone unturned. They are agreeing to undue demands of residents and even getting works in the name of ‘development’ done in areas which are not required.

Councillors are getting works of more than Rs 5 crore done in various city parks so as to beautify them and make people realise that development is on. Roads are being widened while new sewer lines are being laid by digging well-metalled roads.

In Sarabha Nagar B block, area councillor Amrit Varsha Rampal is getting three fountains constructed in a small park, leaving hardly any place for grass. The already constructed railing on all corners, which was in good condition,is being reconstructed.

And the councillor simply said,” This is being done on public demand. A submersible is also being bored in the park so that fountains get no shortage of water like other parks in the city.”

It needs to be mentioned that most of the parks having fountains are just wasting space and because of the water shortage, they are not operational in the city. In fact, their parts have also been stolen. A renovation of the park is also being done in Gurdev Nagar.

In Tagore Nagar, additional chairs have been added in the parks while the existing ones were already in plenty. New shelters are being made in parks, the footpaths are being re-constructed and even whitewashing is being done in many parks.

In Kitchlu Nagar road, widening works are being done while in Punjab Mata Nagar, sewer lines are being widened by digging well constructed roads.

Information revealed that construction works of more than Rs 10 crore are on in the city under the building and roadways section and nearly Rs 5 crore for the operations and maintenance (O&M) cell. Fresh tenders of new works of about Rs 4.5 crore under the O&M cell will be opened this week itself. With the elections approaching, councillors are in a hurry to get the maximum works completed, whether they are needed or not.
