In what is being seen as a love affair gone wrong, three youth allegedly set alight a 17-year-old girl and left her to die in an empty plot early on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred at Simla Colony in Bast Jodhewal.

According to police, the girl, whose father is employed with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation, used to go to a nearby milk dairy to clean it and get milk. As usual she left her home on Saturday morning but when she did not return for over three hours, her mother went to the dairy to ask for her. While her mother was returning home, after being told that the girl had not reported for work on Saturday, she saw a group of people standing at a crossing, who told her that some boys whose faces had been covered, first threw kerosene on the girl and then set her on fire. After throwing the girl in an empty plot the boys fled from the scene. People in the area doused the fire and rushed her to the Civil Hospital.

“The girl had received 90 per cent burns and was referred to Christian Medical College and Hospital for treatment. We are looking for the boys and very soon arrests will be made,” SHO Balwinder Singh said.

Meanwhile, sources said police have rounded up one of the three boys but are yet to make the arrest official. They added that the girl was having an affair with a boy,who worked with a property dealer and lived in the same area. The girl wanted the boy to marry her while the boy was ready to do so,which, reportedly caused tension between the two.
