With the arrest of three persons, city police have claimed to solve the firing incident outside industrialist Sheetal Gupta’s house in Industrial Area on Wednesday.

“The king pin of the conspiracy Rakesh Singh has been arrested, along with two of his accomplices Mohammad Alzar Khan and Deepak Kumar, from Malerkotla. The fourth member of the gang,Vinod Kumar,is still absconding. While Rakesh,Vinod and Deepak were direct perpetuators of the crime,Khan was involved in conspiracy alone. He did not participate in the actual action,” said Senior Superintendent of Police Suchain Singh Gill.

According to the police,Vinod and Rakesh fired shots in the air from their 32 bore gun outside Gupta’s residence and then called Gupta to demand a ransom of Rs 2 crore.

“During investigations,we discovered that the accused had planned to kidnap a member of the Gupta family. Finding abduction to be a tough proposition, the four resorted to intimidating the family,” said the SSP.

The accused made the ransom calls from Ludhiana,Malerkotla and even Mumbai, said police.

The motorcycle, mobile phone, and the gun used by the accused have also been recovered by the police. “Basically,we traced the accused from the phone calls,” said the SSP.

All the accused are aged between 25 to 30 years. Rakesh worked for Kotak Mohindra company as an agent.

Vinod is unemployed while Khan and Rakesh held private jobs.
