All I want to do is entertain, rocks singer Sona Mohapatra

This time,at the Punjab Gold Cup hockey tourney, the crowds were in for a big surprise. The stage was set,the band was tuned in and up stepped Sona Mohapatra, ready to rock the night. For the uninitiated,Sona’s the voice behind the popular number Aaja ve,and she is also the sister of Pratichee Mohapatra, the Channel V Viva girl. In fact, the lyrics of her album were penned by none other than city’s very own Munna Dhiman. Well, enough with the connections, the real thing is that Sona delivered an electrifying performance singing to songs like Aaja Ve,Aaj ki raat from the movie Don,hit Punjabi numbers like Ji karda from Singh is Kinng,Nit Khair Manga of Hans Raj Hans, and her favourite,Laal Meri at the tourney.

An engineering and MBA by profession,Sona gave it all up for singing. “I still continue with Hindustani classical riyaaz,it’s been 12 years now,” she smiles gently, quite an anti-thesis off stage. “I just love the thrill of a live performance,” says this livewire who enthralled the crowd with her power-packed gig. Her maiden visit to the city,we quizzed her about her sport. “I really don’t follow any sport. My idea through such performances is to interact with the audience and entertain.” Her new album ‘Raat Din’ will be out soon, and according to her,it has has a amazing flavour of rock. “We’ve shot one of the songs in New York and it will soon be on air,” tells Sona, who doesn’t follow any trend in music. ‘Because I love to do my own thing,” her source of inspiration varies from food, literature to life and its many stories. “I’m open to all kinds of genres and I don’t mind experimenting…I want to make timeless songs, but yes, quality is paramount,” she quips. It always is.
