Meters were sent for laboratory testing; move follows submission of report

Eight units run by the Bains brothers — Simarjeet Singh Bains and Balwinder Singh Bains — at New Shimlapuri area have been imposed a penalty of Rs 55 lakh by Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL). The independent MLAs have been running two large-scale units and six medium-scale units in this area.

According to information available from PSPCL,last month the enforcement wing had conducted a mass raid at Bains’ allies and their meters had also been sent to testing laboratories. Following the test reports of the meters, the fine has been imposed on the allies.

Confirming the developments,Executive Engineer B S Sidhu said,“We have sent a notice worth Rs 55 lakh in the wake of the report of the enforcement wing. The units had been making unauthorised use of power,ie the power was not being used for the purpose for which they got it sanctioned.”

The allies will have to send back a reply within 10 days and the next action will be taken on the basis of the reply filed, said officials.

The Bains brothers had contested as independent candidates from Ludhiana South and Atam Nagar after leaving the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD). While Balwinder Bains defeated Mayor Hakam Singh Giaspura,Simarjeet Bains defeated Cabinet Minister Hira Singh Gabria.
