Punjab score facile win over J&K

A fine bowling display from Taruwar Kohli (4 for 28) and a splendid batting performance from Uday Kaul (79 not out) helped Punjab register their first win after defeating Jammu and Kashmir by six wickets in the Ranji Trophy one-day tournament for North Zone at the HPCA Stadium,Dharamshala on Thursday.

Batting first,J&K posted 218 runs in 49.2 overs. Manoj Joglekar top scored with 73 runs while Ian Dev contributed 45 runs to the team’s total. For Punjab,Taruwar claimed four wickets while Sarabjit and Ankur took two wickets each. Chasing the target,Punjab reached the target for the loss of four wickets in 37.3 overs. Uday Kaul remained unbeaten on 79 while Ankur Kakkar (44) and Ravi Inder Singh (41) gave him able support.

Brief score: J&K: 218 all out in 49.2 overs (Manoj Joglekar 73,Imraj Thakur 45,Ian Dev Singh 45,Taruwar Kohli 4 for 28) lost to Punjab: 219 for 4 in 37.3 overs (Uday Kaul 79 no,Ankur Kakkar 44,Ravi Inder Singh 41).

Chess meet from tomorrow

The Chandigarh Chess Association will organise the Chandigarh Open Prize Money Chess Championship from February 20 to 23 at the St Xavier’s Senior Secondary School,Sector 44. The last date for the submission of the entries is February 19. The first round will be held on February 20 starting at 2.30 pm.

BSNL cricket tourney from tomorrow

The Punjab Circle Sports and Cultural Board of BSNL will be organising the 8th All India BSNL Cricket Tournament from February 21 to 28 at Chandigarh. Twenty-three teams from all over the country including the MTNL-Mumbai will be taking part in the tournament. The opening ceremony will be held on February 21 at the Sector 16 Cricket Stadium at 9.00 am. The matches will be played at six grounds with two matches played daily. The finals will be played at the Sector 16 Stadium following the closing ceremony on February 28.

Cricket championship on anvil

THE Chandigarh Sports Club is organising the Fifth Bharat Kesho Gupta Memorial League Cricket Tournament from February 22. The matches will be played at the Cricket Stadium,Sector 3,Panchkula and Cricket Stadium Sector 16,Chandigarh. In this tournament,teams from banks,corporate sector and financial institutions are eligible to participate. Matches will be played only on Sundays. Entries close with Naresh Dhingra at 9463800030.
