Delhi CM says duo exonerated of rioting charges, ticket given on basis of winnability
Justifying the allotment of party tickets to Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler to contest the Lok Sabha elections,Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dixit today said the charges of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots had not been proved against them. Hence, they are not guilty and free to contest the elections.
The Delhi CM said this while talking to mediapersons after presiding over the annual convocation of the Guru Nanak Khalsa College for Women (GNKCW),here today.
While replying a question,Dixit defended the decision of the party to nominate Tytler and Sajjan as the party candidates from Delhi, the Delhi CM said that the duo had been exonerated of the charges of their alleged involvement in the riots after the assassination of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Besides, she added, they had never been convicted by any court in the case.
She said that among other various factors, winnability was the main criteria in the selection of candidates for elections by the party high command. Both these candidates, she said, had won the last election with huge margins. She said that both Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler had secured victory in the last general elections with a huge margin. In response to a question,Dixit denied that these two candidates were being opposed by the Sikh community.
On being asked whether the issue of the alleged hate speech by BJP candidate from Pilibhit was that big an incident that even the Prime Minister had to speak about it while announcing the election manifesto,Dixit blamed the media itself for blowing the issue out of proportion. She said the Prime Minister had just replied to a query by the media at the release of the party’s manifesto in the same manner as she was being asked about to comment on the issue today.
Dixit said that some leaders were compulsive condemnators and would condemn anybody and everybody. She said that such persons need to be ignored.
Harvinder Singh Sarna, former president of the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC),who was also present on the occasion, said their organisation was not concerned about the allotment of tickets to Tytler and Sajjan Kumar by Congress though they have expressed their resentment.
But we are only looking towards Dr Manmohan Singh as the projected prime minister for the Congress. Dr Singh is far better as a PM than BJP’s prime ministerial hopeful Lal Krishna Advani, Sarna added.
