A 17-YEAR-OLD GIRL employed as a domestic help at the residence of a police inspector in Ludhiana was found dead under mysterious circumstances Wednesday night. Tension prevailed in Ranjit Nagar of Barewal Thursday after the girl’s family alleged that she had been sexually exploited and murdered. However, inspector Varunjit Singh, head of PCR squad of Ludhiana police and the girl’s employer, claimed that she had committed suicide and her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan in her room. He added that his brother-in-law Gurwinder Singh’s family lived on the upper floor of their residence and the girl had been working for them.

Local residents blocked roads and pelted stones at policemen who were deployed to control the situation. Inspector Vinod Kumar, SHO, division number 5 police station, was seriously injured. He was hit by a stone and lost a tooth. He underwent a surgery at Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH). Later, the girl’s body was sent for postmortem to a civil hospital.

The girl’s brother alleged that when he went to meet his sister around 7.30 pm Wednesday, the family did not allow him to do so. He claimed that he was informed around midnight about his sister’s “suicide”. He added that inspector Varunjit Singh asked him to reach civil hospital only on Thursday morning to see his sister’s body.

Meanwhile, Gurpreet Singh, ACP (west) claimed that the body was found hanging from a ceiling fan and that the lock of the room was broken in the presence of the deceased’s brothers. “Her two brothers were present when we broke the lock around 12.30 am. The body was hanging from the fan. They were called to the spot before we entered the room,” said Singh. He added that a postmortem would be conducted Friday. Meanwhile, the police filed inquest proceedings under section 174 of CrPC at PAU police station. “The cause of death will be clear only after postmortem examination,” the ACP added.
