For MLA Darshan Singh Shivalik, fulfilling the poll promises made by his own party Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) is fast becoming a difficult task.

Shivalik,a two-time MLA from Gill constituency in Ludhiana district, enjoys huge public support, and is now planning to knock at the door of Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal in connection with construction of roads in rural areas of the state,a demand put up by many leaders of SAD.

Agreeing to their demands, the CM had ordered the Punjab Mandi Board to do the needful. Before the state went to Assembly polls, construction of these roads had begun. However, with the code of conduct coming into force, the construction was stopped. While the SAD-BJP combine is back in power, construction on these roads has not resumed.

As for the under-construction roads in Gill constituency — like the ones from the main G T Road to Alowal village,Noorpur Bet,Malakpur,Majhfaguwal, then on to Talwandi Kalan,Bahadurke, from Ayali Kalan village to Bains village, from Ferozepur road to Jhande village — whatever was constructed has also given way.

“I have made countless rounds of the Mandi Board offices but there has been no response at all. I have even taken up the issue of bad construction material used in certain places but again the response is negative. My only hope lies with the state government, for it is not the officials but we MLAs who have to go back to the people for votes. I am answerable to people of my constituency and will request for an inquiry by a Vidhan Sabha committee,” Shivalik says.

It has also come to light that at many places small children are seen involved in construction of roads. While the incharge at such places says these children are not engaged by the board, there is no one stopping these children from doing this work.

Ravinder Cheema,vice-president,Punjab Mandi Board, says,“We have issued strict instructions to all contractors not to employ children. The contractors have told us that the parents make the children work. As far as the issue of construction of roads is concerned,I will look into the matter because the work should not stop as we have the funds and everything.”
