RAVINDER Gosain, a senior RSS leader in Punjab, was shot dead at his residence in Ludhiana on Tuesday morning by two masked gunmen on a motorbike, police said. Gosain, 58, the mukhya shikshak of the Mohan shakha of the RSS, was killed at his residence in Gagandeep Colony in the Basti Jodhewal area.

The Sangh leader’s killing comes more than a year after another prominent RSS leader from the state, Jagdish Gagneja, was shot in Jalandhar last August. Gagneja succumbed to his injuries a month later.

Gosain’s family members said he was associated with the RSS for more than three decades, and was also the mandal pradhan and coordinator of the RTI wing of the local BJP unit.

Gosain’s son Deepak Kumar said, “My father was at the gate of our residence, when two persons on a motorbike called out to him. As he looked towards them, they shot him. He died on the spot.”

According to Kumar, the incident happened a few minutes after Gosain had returned from the shakha on Tuesday morning. “He was in RSS uniform when he was shot. He was feeding dogs along with his grandson and granddaughter at around 7.20 am when the killers shot him. He got hit by two bullets — one in the head and another on the shoulder. I was inside our home when this happened. At first, I thought it was children bursting firecrackers ahead of Diwali,” said Deepak.

Police at the Basti Jodhewal station have registered an FIR on the charge of murder against unidentified persons.

Ludhiana Police Commissioner R N Dhoke said, “According to initial investigations, two weapons were used in the attack — 0.30 and 0.32 pistols. He was shot in point-blank range. The post mortem report is awaited.”

Dhoke said that CCTV footage showed the suspects moving around in the area on a yellow motorbike before the killing. “The registration number is not clear, but we are trying to trace it,” he said.

According to Dhoke, police are probing if “terrorists” were involved in the attack. “According to his family, he never received any threats or had any personal enmity,” he said.

Dhoke said that a Special Investigation Team led by DCP Gaganajit Singh has been constituted to probe the case.

On January 18 last year, two unidentified persons opened fire outside the venue of an RSS shakha at Shaheedi Park in Ludhiana. Although no one was injured, police have not identified the culprits. Police also failed to make any headway in the killing of Gagneja, with the case now being probed by the CBI.

On Tuesday, following Gosain’s cremation, which was attended by BJP state president Vijay Sampla and other senior party and Sangh leaders, RSS and BJP workers marched to the Police Commissioner’s office to register their protest over the killing.

District BJP president Ravinder Arora said, “Once again, we have been targeted. Our workers are questioning why we are being targeted and police is failing to make any headway in these cases.”
