Punjabi Sahit Akademi: Gill gets second term as president

With big names staying away from this year’s Punjab Sahit Akademi elections,sitting president Gurbhajan Gill on Thursday was unanimously elected president for a second term.

With big names staying away from this year’s Punjab Sahit Akademi elections,sitting president Gurbhajan Gill on Thursday was unanimously elected president for a second term.

The Akademi elects its team for a term of two years. Apart from Prof Gill,Dr Sukhdev Singh Sirsa will continue as general secretary while Dr Joginder Singh Nirala as vice-president (out of Punjab) from 2012-14. The last election had taken place on May 2,2010.

The election to the remaining posts of senior vice-president,four vice-presidents and 15 executive members will be held on April 15.

While thanking all the members of the Punjabi Sahit Akademi,Prof Gill said promotion of Punjabi language and culture would remain his focus area. “The writers have reposed their faith in me and my team. While it makes me feel that the dreams of our team are the dreams of the literary world,it also brings in more responsibility. For the next two years,we will work for strengthening Punjabi language,” he said.

Dr Sirsa said their team would continue serving the Punjabi language. “We would introduce the work of writers of other languages in Punjabi and would work for the overall development of Punjabi language,” he said.

On April 15,Dr Anoop Singh and Sukhjit would be contesting the election to the post of senior vice-president. A total of eight members would be pitted against each other for the four posts of vice-president,and 26 members would be contesting for 15 posts of executive members.
