Eateries, especially the takeaway joints, situated on Pakhowal Road,Model Town and Sarabha Nagar have put up notices claiming that they will not serve food in cars and that only orders related to packing will be entertained.

The development comes after Ludhiana Commissioner of Police Ishwar Singh issued a strict warning to the tipplers. The police along with the Department of Excise had conducted raids on various parts of the city last week, cracking down on the eating joints that served food to people found consuming liquor in cars.

“Consuming liquor in public places is not allowed. At many places we found that these tipplers caused huge inconvenience to people living near by or on the roads. So I directed my SHOs to check their respective areas for this kind of menace,” Singh said.

While the order is already showing its impact proving to be a huge relief for regular market-goers or residents of the area, for the food joints and the tipplers, this has meant bad news. Sambhavna Kumar,a regular visitor to Sarabha Nagar market, said,“On weekends finding a parking place near the market is a huge difficulty,as the entire space is taken over by the people who sit in their cars and drink. The worst part is that these people pass rude and dirty remarks on women passing by or keep honking to call the waiter. On weekends these food joints become open ahatas (drinking places).”

“In a way, this order is a huge relief for us who can now come here with families. But the police should keep a vigil for some more time,as these drinkers tend to come back,” added Ranjana,Sambhavna’s friend.

However, owners of these food joints are not very happy. “Honestly speaking,it is these drinkers who prove to be a huge income for us. They order large quantities of food. Now we have no option but to stop serving them.,” said a food joint owner.
