Unlike last year when two groups led by P S Gill and Harbans Mundi fought elections, this year four groups will be contesting the PAU Employees’ Union polls scheduled for January 10.

As many as 1,384 employees of PAU will be casting their votes and elect the 15-member PAU employees’ union committee. These polls are held after every two years.

PAU Employee Forum (mango group) will be fighting for all 15 posts and Baldev Singh Walia will be contesting for the president’s post. This group won polls last time in 2011 and incumbent president P S Gill is supporting Walia. Under mango group, there are four more groups which have formed an alliance and are fighting collectively — PAU Employee Federation,PAU Employee Sewa Dal,PAU Employee Progressive Front and PAU Employee Democratic Front.

Walia is contesting for the president’s post for the first time and is ex-senior vice-president. Their election symbol is mango.

The PAU Employee United Front under the leadership of Harbans Singh Mundi is also fighting for all 15 posts. Known as cycle group with cycle as its election symbol, the group is in the news for factionalism as two new groups have emerged out of it who are fighting separately. However, two other groups — PAU Employee Federation and PAU Progressive Employee Front — are still in alliance with Mundi and are fighting under the symbol of cycle.

On factionalism in the group,Mundi, who was president for two times in the past, said,“It was completely their will to leave our group and we will be working for welfare of employees, and that is our only motto.”

Two new groups formed out of Mundi’s group are PAU Employee Democratic Manch, led by Avtar Chand who will be contesting on the symbol of ladder and first time for the president post, and PAU Welfare Front, led by Kewal Krishan Sachdeva, who is standing on the symbol of letterbox and that too only for the president’s post.

Commenting on differences with Mundi and Sachdeva group,Chand said,“We wanted at least four seats but Mundi group was giving us only two. However, when we did a survey in the varsity,we found there was a wave was against Sachdeva. Therefore,we did not want Sachdeva for the president post.”

Sachdeva, however, said,“I will manage president’s post singlehandedly because people are with me.”
