Even before the Congress party has declared its first list of candidates for the Punjab Assembly polls, differences between various local leaders in Ludhiana district have begun to surface. Many ticket aspirants from here have already declared that they will contest as Independents if they are denied the Congress nod for the seats while others are not likely to support the chosen candidates.
A group of Ludhiana Congress councillors held a meeting on Tuesday and announced that if the party High Command ignores their suggestions while choosing candidates, they will field independents at Ludhiana Central,Ludhiana North and Ludhiana West,
Party sources said that despite protests from councillors, former MLA Surinder Dawar has been short-listed for the Ludhiana Central ticket. On Tuesday,a group of councillors held a meeting to protest Dawars candidature but stated that their next course of action will depend on the partys final list. The councillors are likely to field an independent from the constituency if Dawar is given a ticket and similar is the situation in Ludhiana West where there are around 30 aspirants for the Congress ticket. District Congress president Pawan Dewan, councillors Gurpreet Gogi,Bharat Bhushan Aashu and Kulwant Singh Sidhu are among those in the fray.
Former Congress minister Malkait Birmi is seeking the Atam Nagar ticket but party leaders have stated that the constituency needs a new face. At Sahnewal,Inderjit Kasabad had already announced that he will contest as an Independent if the ticket is handed to Rajinder Kaur Bhattals son-in-law Vikram Bajwa.
