The Citizen’s Forum for Public Causes has sought an inquiry by the Punjab chief minister regarding the number of “useless” projects undertaken by the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation.

S S Chana,a member of the newly formed forum, said: “The decision to construct a squash court at the public park in Rakh Bagh is a sheer waste of public money. Moreover, the corporation purchased four machines worth crores for cleaning roads. They are not put to use and can be seen lying unutilised at the Rose Garden most of the times.”

In a letter to Parkash Singh Badal,a copy of which is with Newsline, forum member K S Monga has said: “The residents of the Cemetery Road are irked over unwanted regular replacement of tiles on the pavements of their park, mainly to give work to the favoured contractor. Moreover, water fountains and electric trees have been installed in various city parks. While one fountain costs Rs 5 lakh,an electric tree comes at around Rs 19 lakh. None of the water

fountains are,however,functional.”

Col Harjap Singh and Major S S Khosla stated: “Construction on the Leisure Valley-2 was started in 2003. The contractor has already been paid Rs 45 lakh. But the park is lying in a shambles and the authorities are in a deep slumber over the issue.”

The members have alleged that tax-payers’ money is being wasted for useless works by the corporation.
