Slamming the state government for deteriorating law and order situation and the recent death of a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly put on fire by six youths, Congress spokesperson Sukhpal Singh Khaira on Wednesday demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who is also the Home Minister of Punjab.
Khaira was present at the office of Commissioner of Police and met the family of the 16-year-old victim.
However, Khaira was soon put on the backfoot when the media started questioning him why the then Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit did not resign from her post when December 16 rape victim died two years back.
Khaira was also asked why he remained absent from the meetings of the Joint Action Committee which was formed by various political parties to get justice for two Dalit brothers who were shot dead in Jamalpur on September 27 this year.
Khaira, as a Congress representative, attended only the first meeting of the committee and remained absent in all meetings for two months.
Asked if he had forgotten that the Congress was part of JAC to get justice for Dalit brothers, Khaira said, “I was too busy due to other issues but now I will ensure that we attend JAC meetings.”
Tarsem Singh Jodhan, from CPM, one of the founder members of JAC, also questioned Khaira. “I asked him why he did not attend any meeting except the first one. I asked if he has forgotten cold-blooded murders of Dalit brothers. He just came in the first meeting and was absent in all others. Today also he came to meet the family of 16- year-old immolation victim since it is a new issue. He has promised me that a Congress representative will attend the meetings in future,” Jodhan told Newsline.
