While the historical SCD Government College of Ludhiana will only complete 100 years in 2020, preparations for the platinum jubilee celebrations have already begun. The alumni and the college management on Thursday held a meeting to prepare the blueprint for the event. It includes renovation and expansion of Gulistan-e-Sahir, the botanical garden which was created at college premises in the memory of poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi and the auditorium dedicated to him.

Sahir is synonymous with the college. He not only put Ludhiana on the map with his timeless poetry but also gave Bollywood songs a new outlook. His creations like ‘Main Pal Do Pal Ka Shayar Hun, Pal Do Pal Meri Kahaani Hai’ are still hummed and fondly remembered. So its is no surprise that the college’s celebrations will revolve around poetry and its alumni. The college hopes to release a souvenir with details of 100 successful alumni and plans to publish 100 best poems written by many of them.

As for Gulistan-e-Sahir, the botanical garden was created by the late Urdu poet Bhupinder Aziz Parihar, who was a lecturer here. It is said that when the garden was created, a floriculturist from PAU, developed a special variety of flowers named after Sahir. However SCD has more to it than Sahir.

Talking to Newsline, Bal Anand, IFS officer and former high commissioner to New Zealand, listed the others, “Satish Chander Dhawan was a great scientist after whom the college is named. David Dhawan (director), Manmohan Singh (IAS cum poet), KPS Gill (former DGP Punjab), K K Daruwala (IPS officer cum poet), Joginder Singh (former CBI director), Manohar Singh Gill (former election commissioner) and N N Vohra (J &K governor ) have all made the college proud”. He added , “ I still remember that in November 1970 when college celebrated golden jubilee famous painter Harikrishan Lal and alumni from Pakistan were also honored”.

Dharam Singh Sandhu, principal told Newsline, “The botanical garden will be expanded in coming months and renovation will be done as per requirement. College management is also working on restoration of the premises and Sahir Auditorium will also be renovated. The work on souvenir has also started.”
