CLAIMING THAT he spotted “illegal mining” going on unabated, AAP MLA H S Phoolka from Dakha constituency ‘raided’ the spot under Nakodar bridge over Sutlej river in Sidhwan Bet division of his constituency on Saturday, along with a police team

Addressing the media Sunday, Phoolka claimed that when he and the police team reached the spot, the accused had already fled, leaving behind a “trolley filled with sand.” The Sidhwan Bet police, after seizing the trolley, filed an FIR against unidentified persons under the Mining Act.

Phoolka said, “I got a tip-off that illegal mining was going on unabated at this spot for the past three days. So, I decided to visit the spot myself and check if it was true. Indeed, the illegal mining at Sidhwan Bet was going on unabated. We even saw the JCB machines that they were using to dig out sand. However, seeing our vehicles approaching, the miscreants fled.”

Phoolka claimed, “They had dug at least 5-6 feet near the bridge, weakening its foundation. As per the National Green Tribunal (NGT), there can be no digging near the bridge’s foundation but the sand mafia in Punjab is not afraid of any law or government.” He added that action had also been initiated against mining officer of the area.
