P S Ghumman on Friday became the new District Bar Association president. He won with 769 votes defeating his nearest rival who secured 681 votes. Hemant Kalia,another contestant,finished at the third place.
Ghumman had earlier also been president for two times. The current president,Jagmohan Singh Wariach,did not contest this time.
After winning the election,Ghumman said he would not allow political interference in the Bar affairs and would walk with everyone to work for development and betterment of the bar association. We will work for the betterment of the bar. All the members are almost new this time,but I will co-ordinate with all of them and will fulfil the expectations of our voters, he said.
Ghumman vowed a clean and green environment in the judicial complex apart from clean drinking water supply.
While all the members of the Harish Rai Dhanda and BK Goyal group lost out,independent members came out as winners this time.
For the post of vice-president,Gurdeep Singh Sal won with 712 votes while Harinder Nara,his nearest rival,got 612 votes. Rustam Pal Singh was the new secretary with 946 votes by defeating SP Singh who got only 545 votes.
For the post of joint secretary,Prashant Kumar emerged as a winner with the maximum votes of 1,081 while his nearest rival got only 760 votes.
Hari Om became the finance secretary,defeating Sukhdev Singh by 94 votes. In all,1,881 votes were polled out of the total 2,149. The elections are held for a term of one year.
