The city was rocked by four reported suicides on Saturday. The first case was reported from Salem Tabri where newly wed Pinki was found hanging from the ceiling fan of her home. The situation turned volatile when Pinki’s kin ransacked her in-laws home and tried to attack them.

Area SHO Gurbans Singh said,“The deceased’s father has told us that Pinki had been married to Harpreet Singh in April. The father claims Pinki was being harassed by her mother-in-law and the husband of her sister-in-law for more dowry as a result of which Pinki had returned to her parent’s home. It was only after a compromise had been stuck between the two parties that Pinki returned to her in-laws home just a couple of days back. Pinki’s father claims that her in-laws have murdered his daughter.”

In the second incident Joban singh — who played the tabla — at the Gau Ghat Gurdawar was found floating in the Gurdara sarovar with his hands and feet tied. A suicide note was found tucked under Singh’s slippers where he had stated that he did not hold any one responsible for his death. Area SHO Maninder Bedi said,“We have checked the room of the deceased and have found a diary which belonged to him. We will get the hand writing of this suicide note matched with that on the dairy.”

On the issue of Singh’s hand and feet being tied,Bedi said,“The water level in this sarovar is very low and he probably tied his own hands and feet to ensure he sank.”

The third incident was reported in Gandhi Colony, Moti Nagar, where a young girl Shivani was found hanging from a ceiling fan in her home. Rajesh Kumar, area incharge, informed that Shivani was the youngest daughter out of eight children. Shivani’s family was undergoing severe financial crunch as the deceased’s father,Satish, suffers from paralysis. It is alleged that Shivani was mentally upset and committed suicide.

The fourth incident was reported from Hargobind Nagar where Ashwani Kumar’s family alleges he took an overdoze of some medicine on Friday and died on Saturday. As per police Ashwani — survived by his wife son and a daughter— was under a lot of stress.
