Four members of a family were found dead with bullet injuries in mysterious circumstances at their residence in I-block of Bhai Randhir Singh Nagar on Friday morning.
However, the police said that prima facie, it appeared to be a case of suicide by 45-year-old Sandeep Singh Mangat, who was mentally disturbed, short-tempered and a liquor addict. Before killing himself, he shot dead his mother, daughter and wife. A forensic team from Mohali was called for further investigation.
Around 10.30 am on Friday, the family’s domestic help Sunita raised the alarm after spotting the bodies. Later, it came to light that another 14-year-old domestic help Pinky who used to live with the family was present in the house when the incident happened.
Those found dead included Bachan Kaur, 70, mother of Sandeep; his wife Aman Kaur, 42; and daughter Dinaz Kaur, 16. The body of Bachan was found lying in the lobby. Dinaz was lying dead on the first floor while Aman was found in her bedroom. It seemed that Aman was shot dead in sleep. The body of Sandeep was found lying beside his wife on the bed.
The police also recovered .315 bore double barrel rifle, six bullets and five shells from the spot. Two other rifles were recovered from locker on the first floor.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Ludhiana Police Commissioner J S Aulakh said, “Prima facie, it is a case of suicide before which the man eliminated his family too. As per statement of domestic help, she saw Mangat holding the rifle around 4.30 am. She got scared and tried stopping Mangat from picking up weapon. Mangat threatened her and asked her to move to her room. Then, Mangat first shot dead his daughter. There are signs of scuffle between the both. The daughter resisted and also ran around the room. He shot her in the head and she died.”
The police said, after hearing the gunfire, the domestic help again came out of her room but Mangat told her to go inside, else he would shoot her too. She ran upstairs and locked herself in the bathroom of her room.
The television of the room where Bachan was sitting was still on when the police reached. As per the police, Mangat later shot his mother and then his wife before killing himself.
“As per investigation till now, Mangat was short-tempered, a liquor addict and mentally unstable. The family was rich and he owned various properties. So, there is no angle of financial issues so far. His brother who is settled abroad has been informed and a forensic team from Mohali has started investigation. A post-mortem of bodies will be done on Saturday. The inquest proceedings under Section 174 of CrPC have been filed at Sarabha Nagar police station,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Dhruman Nimbale.
The DCP added, “There are no signs of robbery as Aman Kaur’s jewellery, including gold bangles, was still there on her body and none of the cupboards was found ransacked.”
