The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has failed to pay salaries for the month of October to its employees after more than half of November has passed.
More than 7,500 employees of the MC celebrated the major festivals of Deepawali and Gurpurab without salaries. The salaries have to be paid in the first week of the month.
On Monday,class IV employees of the MC,who number around 5,000,and include sweepers,beldars,maali-cum-beldaar,sewer men and peons were given their salaries.
However,the salaries of class III employees including clerical staff and inspectors,and class II staff including superintendents,SDOs and XENs are pending for the month of October.
Not only this,the salaries of class I staff,including commissioner,mayor,additional commissioners,joint commissioners and councillors,are pending too.
Asked about the salaries of these employees,MC Commissioner Rahul Tewari said,Salaries are ready and these will be paid in the next two or three days.
The net salaries of the employees are around Rs 16 crore a month,after deductions of Rs 4 crore.
Data collected from the accounts branch of the MC show that funds released for the month of October were much less than the expenses and the payments that were to be made. Around Rs 9 crore went in paying salaries of class IV employees,Rs 6 crore were spent on the power bill and the Rs 7.5 crore on new buses procured under JNNURM.
Talking to Newsline,an independent councillor said,We have still not got our salary of Rs 12,000 and MC talks of projects worth crores.
A sweeper who has still not got his salary said,I have not got the salary because I am on contract. Only regularised sweepers got salary on Monday.
