The seriousness of the Municipal Corporation on the issue of parking lots could be easily gauged from the fact that the auction of the remaining nine parking lots on the Ferozepur road which was scheduled for 3 pm at Zone D office in Sarabha Nagar finally began at 4.45 pm.

While no senior officer from the MC was present till 4.45 pm in the office, bidders were seen waiting haplessly. In the auction that finally began late, the civic body was able to auction only three out of the nine remaining sites, taking the total to seven. Six sites remain unsold even after three auctions and reduction of prices by more than 50%.

The sites that went under the hammer on Monday were Bharat Nagar Chowk to Court Road (for Rs 14.40 lakh/ reserve price Rs 14 lakh),Sandhu Tower to Malhar Road (for Rs 17.80 lakh/base price Rs 17.56 lakh) and Aarti Chowk to Bhai wala chowk near Madhok Complex (for Rs 29 lakh/base price Rs 28 lakh).

While the next High Court hearing is on August 2,before which MC was trying to sell off all the sites, visitors even in less than a month of auction have started complaining of misbehaviour and overcharging by the contractors on the sites auctioned on June 26.

Gursimran Kaur,a local resident, said,“I was asked for Rs 30 for one hour while MC rate is Rs 20 for one hour and Rs 30 for two hours. When I argued, the contractor started misbehaving. The slip which I was given by the contractor was also torn from the area where rates were printed.”

When contacted,Naveen Malhotra, superintendent (tehbazaari) and looking after the whole project, said,“The auction started late because we were busy in meeting of councillors.”

On the complaints being received against contractors,he said,“We will not spare contractors harassing and overcharging public. MC staff will be deployed at these sites to keep a check.”
