In A dramatic turn of events in Khanna Wednesday, Bikram Cheema, BJP (rural) president, made expelled BJP leader Anil Kumar Phally and his wife Rajni Phally ‘rejoin’ the party.

Phally is a cousin of BJP minister Anil Joshi and he along with wife had been expelled from party for six years in February last year. Cheema had called a press meet to welcome the Phally couple into the party fold again.

However, two hours after the announcement, the ‘rejoining’ had to be cancelled after the party top brass in the state raised eyebrows and said they were not even aware of such a programme.

This came as a major embarrassment to Cheema, who was earlier also the BJP (rural) president and his term had next three years on January 3.

Meanwhile, Phally claimed that he had been a member of BJP for 39 years and last year he had been given party ticket for municipal council elections in February last year from ward number 24 in Khanna. However, he fielded his wife Rajni Phally as an Independent candidate from ward number 25 against the official BJP candidate and thus both had been expelled from party for 6 years. So both had contested as Independents and they both won.

Satosh Kalra, in-charge of BJP from Khanna, said, “We were not even aware of the programme and moreover, both had been expelled from party for six years.” Dinesh Kumar, organising secretary of BJP, Punjab, said, “I am totally unaware of this event. The state body was never informed about this so-called rejoining.”

Cheema said, “There was some internal issue due to which joining of the Phally couple was cancelled, a few hours after their re-joining the party.”

Anil Kumar Phally, however, said, “A few persons within BJP created this confusion. Cheema’s effort was to strengthen the party and I am thankful to him.”
