A retired Army man died Friday after he was brutally thrashed by liquor shop staff and owners at Thathi Bhai village of Samalsar in Moga district. The incident occurred Thursday when Beant Singh (40), a resident of Cheeda village, went to a liquor shop at Thathi Bhai to buy liquor. After an altercation over the price with the salesman, Sant Ram, he was thrashed by the staff and owners of the shop.
According to Bhupinder Singh, SHO at Samalsar police station, Sant Ram, along with this two accomplices, Jagdeep Singh and Jeet Singh, brutally thrashed Beant Singh with sticks and kicks. He was left on the spot to die, but was dropped home later by an acquaintance Bunty. The family rushed him to hospital where he died Friday.
Moga SSP Snehdeep Sharma said an FIR had been registered against five persons for murder, including two owners of the vend. The police are yet to make any arrests.
“The liquor here was being sold illegally at a nearby establishment, not at the vend which lies sealed by the excise and taxation department,” said the police. Meanwhile, the Assistant Excise and Taxation Commissioner of Moga Joginder Singla said, “This was one of the 160 vends which were sealed by the department a few days back.” He said that dues of Rs 16 crore were pending due to which 160 vends were sealed in Moga.
