Some 60 cars were towed on the day one of the towing campaign started by the district police on Tuesday.
ACP Swapan Sharma informed,This campaign was under our consideration for almost a month now. For the campaign we have divided the city into zones and requested the Commissioner,Ludhiana Municipal Corporation,to ensure that the white and yellow parking lines are painted on the roads. Eighty per cent of the roads in the city have these parking lines and wherever they are missing, the MC will get the job done.
The police have also put up 100 boards, asking people to park within the lines.
From today onwards, cars or vehicles parked outside these lines will towed instantly. We will allow some degree of violation. We have deputed six tow vehicles in the area and an official with the challan book will be present inside each vehicle. Earlier,we used to serve four challans – one for not having a license or RC of the vehicle, one for wrong or dangerous parking requiring towing. From now on,only one challan of towing will be handed over to the driver of the car and he will be given an option of taking back his vehicle after depositing one document with us. The defaulter can then deposit the fine with the DTO office and take his document from there. The towed vehicle will be brought to the Traffic Police compound and kept there. In short,a person can get back his car in a matter of a couple of hours and not days as used to be the case earlier, added ADCP Sharma.
The zones that the police has worked out include Zone 1 which comprises the area from Fountain Chowk to Durga Matar Mandir to Park Plaza to Feroze Gandhi Market,Zone 2 which comprises the entire Ghumar Mandi,Zone 3 which includes Fountain Chowk to Bharat Nagar Chowk to Preet palace to Dugri and Zone 4 which comprises Gol Market to Kailash Cinema Chowk to SessioN Chowk to Dandi Swami to Rajpura Chowk, and Zone 5 which includes the area between Park Plaza to Nanaksat to Hero Bakery and from Hero bakery back to Ferozepur Chowk.
