The Municipal Corporation once again cancelled demolition drive in Pavitar Nagar on Saturday. Since last year, MC has failed to remove a single encroachment in sensitive area of Pavitar Nagar where shopkeepers have encroached roads on Sem Nullah.

On Saturday, MC again had same old excuse that police force was not sanctioned in required numbers. As per sources, MC asked for 400 policemen including 100 women constables to accompany 70 employees of Ludhiana MC.

It is to be noted that on May 8 last year, MC team returned back empty handed from same area without touching a single encroachment. The residents were well supported by Congress district president Pawan Dewan and BJP leader Rajinder Bhandari who stopped MC officials from removing encroachments on Sem Nullah.

Afterwards also, the team went on January 31 this year and stones were pelted on MC team and their vehicles were vandalized.

Talking to Newsline, Shruti Singh, MC commissioner said, “We did not want to go ahead with drive without adequate police force. There is always concern on security of MC staff and we will be re-scheduling drive soon. Even we do not have much time as High Court hearing in at the door.”

Punjab and Haryana High Court in its last hearing called MC commissioner personally to attend the hearing and next hearing is now on May 27. Sanjeev Kalra, police commissioner said, “Police force was quite busy due to elections but we will provide MC with adequate force soon.”
