A delegation of the United Cycles Parts and Manufacturers Association (UCPMA),which had gone to China, reached Ludhiana today. Two of the members had been arrested by the Chinese police in an anti-prostitution raid in the hotel. Former UCPMA President Charanjit Singh Vishvkrama said,The incident happened on the night we reached China. No doubt it has given a bad image to us and our exhibition work suffered for a day. But later the rest of the delegation did their work normally.
He said that they have placed orders worth Rs 3 crore for various types of machines which are needed in their industry. European customers too made business inquiries in the exhibition, which can generate huge business.
Association President Gurmeet Kular and member Manjinder Singh have stayed back in China and will come along with the two traders who are under arrest, informed Vishvkarma. He added that the traders will be released at midnight on May 7and they will then be able to proceed back to India.
He,however, pointed out that next time the Association needs to be more strict while choosing members for such delegations to foreign countries.
