While the Congress is yet to release its first list of candidates for the Punjab polls, the sister-in-law of a senior Congress councillor along with the area residents held a matka phod protest in Chauri Sarak, claiming that the party High Command had allotted the Ludhiana Central ticket to former Congress MLA Surinder Dawar and not her relative. Shubh Lata Malhotra,sister-in-law of senior Congress councillor Shyam Sunder Malhotra, who is in Delhi lobbying for a ticket, says she has information that the party ticket had gone to Dawar, despite opposition from local leaders.

“In the list they have again cleared the ticket of Surinder Dawar who has been opposed by 13 Congress councillors, but the party High Command has refused to listen to this,” Shubh, whose husband was killed by terrorists, said. “ Shyam Sunder served the party for 22 years and even my husband sacrificed his life and still the Congress has ignored us. This is not justified,” she added.

Lending their support to Shubh Malhotra’s agitation and joining her, residents of Gulchaman Gali,Harbans Pura,Mehmoodpura,Chauri Sarak,Tilak Nagar,Hazuri road and Gulchaman Gali have announced that they will not vote for the Congress.

“It is just fake statements that winnability of candidate is seen, when area residents want Malhotra as candidate, still the party is giving ticket to the one who is not popular,” said Prince,a resident of the area. Area residents allege that corruption in the party may have been a strong reason for the Dawar’s selection, despite opposition from his party colleagues.

On the other hand, sources claim that for Ludhiana West, the Congress has cleared the ticket of party councillor Bharat Bhushan Ashu despite the District Congress Committee (DCC) president Pawan Dewan’s name being shortlisted earlier. Malkait Singh Birmi, who had lost to Hira Singh Gabria by a huge margin during the last polls, has been cleared from Atam Nagar, sources added.

Birmi will face off with Gabria again.

Pappi Parashar is the Congress candidate from Ludhiana South, revealed sources while from Ludhiana East, the ticket was likely to be given to Gurmail Singh Pehalwaan, who joined the Congress few years back after leaving the BSP.

Former DCC President Jagmohan Sharma had been seeking ticket from this constituency and sources revealed that he has threatened the party that he may join SAD if ticket is denied to him.

Till the time of filing the report, however, the list was not released officially by the party and the reactions of the leaders were only on the basis of information received.
