Though the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is officially imposing only 3 hour power cuts in the city, but the unscheduled power cuts clubbed with the scheduled cuts are extending the cuts to more than 6 hours. What has really added to city residents’ woes is that the cuts are effected throughout the night thus giving sleepless nights to many.

The night power cuts are unscheduled, revealed Punjab State Power Corporation authorities because of the overloading of the feeders and sub-stations.

In Model Gram Area,on June 29, nearly 5 hour power cut was imposed at a stretch in the evening hours due to a local fault, while on Pakhowal road on Sunday, after the one hour power cut in the evening, the cut was further extendedbecause the feeder of the particular area had developed a fault.

Mansi Arora,a resident of BRS Nagar said: “ Power cuts continue throughout the night and the next morning we are never fresh”.

Punjab State Power Corporation authorities revealed that normally because of AC load in the night hours, the overloading of the system occurs which results in tripping.

Apart from the power cuts, the residents also complain that the complaint staff never reach in time to attend to their complaints.

Normally the staff complain of no equipment with them to repair the faults.

At times they ask the residents to arrange for a ladder or screw driver, among others.

PSPCL authorities, meanwhile, have revealed that the demand has exceeded to more than 20 per cent this year while they had expected only 10 per cent increase like in most years.

In addition to this, the delayed monsoon has added to the power problems.
