Though the Congress has a policy of not declaring anyone as the chief ministerial candidate prior to the elections,it has not deterred from party workers and leaders in naming their choice from amongst the candidates in fray for the 2012 Punjab polls.

While,Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting,Ambika Soni,a week ago, virtually declared state Congress chief Capt Amarinder Singh as “future chief minister” in a public meeting in Kharar, the party candidate in Malerkotla too is backing him.

Sample this: the loudspeaker on a campaign vehicle blares a song, which says “Captain dee sarkar vaapis leyoni paoogi ( Captain’s government will have to be brought back). The party candidate Razia Sultana backs the song, saying,“Whatever AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi decides would be final, but (we feel) Capt Amarinder is just the right choice for Punjab.”

She not the only one rooting for Amarinder. Baghapurana MLA Darshan Brar too sees Amarinder as the chief minister.

“The party workers in our area has suffered a lot at the hands of Akalis. They have been slapped with false cases and beaten up in thanas. We need some one like Captain who has the guts to set the Akalis right. He is the man who will punish both the Akali leaders and the police officers who helped them torture us,” Brar says.

Moga MLA,Joginderpal Jain, also agrees. “He is the man who can think for the betterment of Punjab.”

A party supporter,Tara Singh, who attended Sonia Gandhi’s rally at Moga, also has a similar opinion. “We need a man to lead Punjab. We can win elections only under Captain. If we do not make him the CM after all his hard work, then it is not fair to him.”

However, there are groups of people in Lehra Gaga area of Sangrur district who want to see ‘their daughter-in-law’ Rajinder Kaur Bhattal in the top seat.

Bhattal was CM for 52 days and had even raised a voice of dissent against Amarinder. Surinder Singh,a Bhattal supporter, says,“It is time a woman led Punjab. We have seen what these men have gotten Punjab into. The state needs healing touch. More over we have Soniaji (Gandhi) at the national level, then why not Bhattal here in Punjab?”
