Badal to distribute free cycles to 1,52,330 girl students today

The Punjab government is all set to distribute free bicycles to 1,52,330 girl students of classes XI and XII studying at government schools.

The Punjab government is all set to distribute free bicycles to 1,52,330 girl students of classes XI and XII studying at government schools under the Mai Bhago Vidya Scheme at a state-level function being organised at Jagraon on Friday.

The scheme will be re-launched. It was a part of the election manifesto of the SAD-BJP government. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal will distribute the bicycles.

Social Security and Welfare Minister Surjit Kumar Jayani said the state government had released Rs 41.90 crore for this scheme for the purchase of bicycles. As many as 82,244 Class XI students and 70,086 Class XII students would benefit from the scheme this year.

He said the SAD-BJP government had launched this scheme in 2011-12 by distributing 1,11,000 free bicycles to girl students worth Rs 30 crore.
